This is an interesting kitchen; there's a huge column (that houses a laundry chute, hot air duct, pantry and possibly some plumbing) to the immediate right in this picture. The countertop that you see on the right tops a drawer stack that is pushed up against the column. The refrigerator faces one side.

This column contains a laundry chute (the small white "hatch"), a pantry (the door) and heating ducts. People think we should take it out, but I like it. It's one of the things that makes this house unique.

The louvered doors above hide totally blah shelves. Even if I don't end up redoing the entire kitchen, I want to put a real cabinet up in place of the shelves, with glass panels in the doors.

Removing the old floors in the breakfast nook. You can see three layers, our modern vinyl, the 1968 brick-patterned lino (?) and, under that, white oak!

This floor was completely unexpected. It is white oak, dirty and stained, but the floor man says that it's easily salvagable. I'm thrilled to death!

Lots of different colors on the walls! It seems that someone kind of slopped on a skim coat of plaster on the walls between the base cabinets and the wall cabinets. I'm not sure why, it was a not-great job.

The darker strip there over the range is where the old hood was. It didn't vent outside, it just "screened" the gunk and blew the air back into the kitchen. Yuck.

We chose cove molding to go with the crown molding in the living room and dining room.
